Located 15 miles west of downtown Minneapolis in Hennepin County, Plymouth is considered  the seventh largest city in Minnesota. As the third largest suburb in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region, Plymouth has a population of 70,576. The original inhabitants of the city  were the Dakota, tracing back to the pre-Columbian period around 1400 to 1500 AD. The Dakota placed their encampment at the north end of Medicine Lake, which was named after the Dakota word “Mdewakanton” meaning “Lake of Spirit.” Plymouth first began as a town in 1855 on the northwest shores of what is now known as Parkers Lake.
