North Oaks is a suburb located ten miles north of Saint Paul in Ramsey County, Minnesota. The area is structured around Pleasant Lake, which made it a water source for the Saint Paul municipal water system in its earlier days. In 1883, the land was purchased by Saint Paul magnate James J. Hill and expanded into a 5,000-acre breeding and hobby farm. The city government does not own any property in the area.

Hill Farm Historical Society – The Hill Farm Historical Society preserves the legacy of James J. Hill’s innovation on over five acres that includes the dairy, blacksmith shop, and the signature “red barn,” which served as the granary. There are guided tours available with appointment.

Lake Johanna Fire Department – The Lake Johanna Fire Department is a nonprofit organization providing fire protection services to the cities of Arden Hills, North Oaks and Shoreview. The department covers 36-square miles and protects a population of about 41,000 residents.
