Choosing The Perfect Dining Room Rug

Whether formal or informal, a dining room is a place for gathering friends and family. It allows for sitting down with your favorite people to not only enjoy a nice meal but also to enjoy each other’s presence. Due to the nature of this living space, it’s important to decorate in a way that encourages conversation and also allows people to open up and feel comfortable. In addition to a soothing color scheme and other décor that makes for a relaxing atmosphere, an area rug is an important design element needed to bring the room together and make it feel complete.

Accessorizing your home‘s design scheme with warm elements and complementary colors will begin your journey to happiness and relaxation.

Considering Your Dining Room Rug

There are many things to consider when investing in an area rug for your dining area.  Here are a few things to think about before making your selection:

Color and pattern

Often times it is the area rug that provides the majority of color and pattern in the dining room, and it is essential to not only consider what it will look like but how the color and pattern will “function” as well.  Will the table be used by my young children?  How often?  Is there a busy traffic pattern by way of the rug area?  Will the area be used only for special occasions?  These are all questions to ask yourself when deciding upon the perfect rug.  Be sure to choose a color and/or pattern that will disguise crumbs and stains with ease if your dining area gets heavy use.

Correct size and shape

Ideally, an area rug should be centered under the dining room table and the lighting above, but that generally goes without saying. The most important thing to remember is that the size and shape of the rug can make or break the look of the entire room.  The general rule of thumb is to allow for 18 to 24 inches around the perimeter of the table so that when chairs are pulled out to sit down, they’re still on top of the area rug.

It is also recommended to choose a shape that mimics the shape of the table and allows for consistency with parallel lines and curves.

Construction, material, and texture

From hand-woven New Zealand wool to power-loomed polypropylene, there are many different materials and textures to choose from for area rugs. Deciding which one will best suit your dining area is about budget, personal preference, and how much time and effort you’re willing to put into its upkeep.
