Biophilic Home Design

What Is Biophilic Home Design?

What is biophilic design and how do you use it throughout your home?

You may have heard about biophilic design through the past year or so with our current health spike. The biophilia hypothesis proposes that most humans have an innate love of nature – we long for it and without connecting with it, our health could suffer. So, biophilic design is a solution to appease this desire for nature by including natural elements and processes into the built environment.

There are a lot of ways you can implement nature throughout your home: colors, textures, animals, plants, rocks, water, etc. One way to start this process is to think about what you love most in nature. What about it brings you clarity and peace?

Once you find it – incorporate it.

Natural elements

Biophilic Home design with sunflowers

The Sunflowers are a bold part of this room and its color scheme.  There are different shades of yellow and blue throughout the room that lend a hand to three natural elements:

  • Water
  • Air
  • The Sun

If natural, raw elements are more your style, you may like my second example more. In the picture below, they painted the walls blue to mimic the sky so it would brighten up their space and their mind, there is a painting that appears to be a landscape in the distance, in which they used natural colors and they used a lot of natural materials like dried flowers, raw wood, and brick to complete the natural look.

The vases on the mantel help bring the sight line up while balancing the negative space between the indoors and nature.

Pictures & statues

Another way to bring biophilic design into your home is through pictures and statues. Some people like to stick with the standard raw wood color for the natural selection – but you can have some fun with color as well.

This flower canvas has the biophilic aspect of nature as well as a nice, warm, comforting color scheme.

If you connect with any piece – it should be in your home representing you.

The golden bird statue is also biophilic – reminding you of the beautiful noise they make in nature.
