Closet Organization Ideas, Tips, and Tricks

Closet Organization

Great closet organization is a Xanadu dreamscape for many of us. I would like to think that we have all seen a picture of a closet that instantly inspired us to want more for our own boring, cluttered closet. Beautiful, organized, shelves and hangers all perfectly decorated in clothing and accessories, lit by a gorgeous chandelier, and an oversized standing mirror are just some of the elements that come to mind.

That ideal may seem hard to reach – it does take a little bit of work to achieve. The end results are always worth the hard work though, and having a beautiful, organized closet is just another great way to add tranquility to your day. Just like my grandma used to say, “It is the small, seemingly unimportant tasks of tidying up that can have the most effect on our mental health.” I like to put it this way – No physical clutter, No mental clutter.

Here are some ways you can stay on top of your physical clutter by organizing your closet space.

First things first, empty your closet

Before you can improve your closet space, you need to be able to see what you’re working with. This includes clothing, accessories, shoes, hangers, etc. Once your space is empty, you can start brainstorming ideas that would help utilize your specific area to the best of its ability.

When I go through areas in my home, I gather anything unwanted but still in good shape and donate it to a local thrift store. It is always better to donate your old items than to throw them away to fill a massive landfill.

Second, select the best storage system for you

Storage systems vary by material, specific use (bedroom closet or kitchen pantry), style, and color. Make sure you talk with an employee who knows about their storage systems and purposes and read the product reviews online before purchasing anything. Another important thing to remember is to measure your space. Sketch it out on a piece of paper if you can, write down the numbers on the specific walls, and take it with you to the store. You will actually be able to start the design process if you have the dimensions in hand.

Third, put back everything you want to keep

Once you have selected your storage system and it is installed, it is time to put back all the clothes and accessories you want to keep and to give it a fresh new organization. Now is the time when you can finally color coordinate your clothing or put your socks and jewelry away in their own special drawer.

After you have taken the time to put everything exactly where you want it, take a step back and admire the beauty.

Fourth, stay on top of the upkeep

Since you’ve just spent all that time and money on the said new organizational system, you want to make sure it stays nice. Cleaning should become a new norm for this area. It will help improve your overall tidiness as well as keep the load smaller. If you stay on top of removing small things that don’t belong, ex. a mug, some dirty laundry, a towel, etc., the load will stay small. It is once you start ignoring those small items that the buildup happens.

Lastly, if it’s too much –reach out to a professional

Planning your closet organization and sorting through messes can be hard. Hard to start, hard to manage, hard to know where to go without more guidance. Reaching out to a professional eliminates any stress with the project while guidance is provided by someone who has a vision for the space. If you need help with redecorating an area or some guidance for a project, feel free to contact Room Reimagined Design at 651-387-3861 for an in-home consultation.
