Designing With Black And White

Black and White in Interior Design

There is no greater color contrast than between black and white, and if used correctly in your home and furnishings design, it can make a dramatic statement in any room.

A palette of purely black and white can be difficult to pull together if you do not know the tricks to properly execute the bold color scheme.   Here are a few pointers for successfully balancing the use of dark and light in your space.

Black and White living room design

Use black as an accent color

Black tones are dark and mysterious, and used with the right back-drop can be absolutely stunning.  Think about using black metal finishes in light fixtures, accessories, and artwork frames.  Be sure to balance black within the room so that it does not become too heavy, or too light in any given area.  Using black in small amounts is a safe choice if you are not ready to commit to a black wall or larger piece of black furniture.

Black and white in small spaces

Although this color scheme can be used successfully in any area of your home, smaller areas like the mudroom or bathroom can make use of the two-tone color scheme very easily. For example, a bathroom could have black marble countertops, white cabinetry, black and white flooring, and a stunning accent tile of mosaic black and white.  Snow white or jet black towels can help to balance the dark and light color placement.

In a larger living area, like a great room, it can be harder to truly stick to these two colors because of all the design elements to be used in the room. It surely isn’t impossible, but you need to consider adding interest with texture, pattern, and variations of black and white tones.

Use patterns

The best thing about this duel color scheme is that both black and white come in a variety of shades that all mix well together and allow for your style and personality to show through. Whether it’s in the wallpaper, window treatments, accessories, artwork, or décor, patterns are an ideal way to add interest to the space and make it your unique look.

Animal prints have been around for years and are still a staple in the design world.  Zebra or leopard prints go perfectly in a black and white color scheme and if you like the nature-inspired look, don’t be afraid to use it in your design.  And, don’t forget about stripes, polka dots, and even florals. They are easy to find in various shades of black and white and provide extra depth to the space of your choosing.

Use multiple textures

If consideration is not given to the textures in the room, a black and white color scheme can easily feel two-dimensional or sterile.  Adding rugs, throw pillows, plush seating options, and blankets around the room will visually warm it up and give it an aesthetically pleasing look. Don’t forget about bringing in a variety of textures within your furniture as well.  Consider wicker or pieces that have an element of distressing, or perhaps a piece that is very sleek and shiny.  To avoid a boring, sterile look, use a variety of textures throughout the room.
