Entryways that WOW!

It’s your entryways that make a statement that can set the stage for the rest of your home.   It is the second impression made upon your guests after their initial look at the exterior as they make their way to your front door; it defines the look and feel that is exuded by your kitchen, living room, and other spaces on your main floor.

Entryways in Interior Design

Because it can make such a major impact – or not, decorating the entryway is something that shouldn’t fall at the bottom of the priority list.  In fact, it should be right there on the top. While the area should be kept free of clutter and furniture should be kept to a minimum, there are many ways to take advantage of bold colors, patterns, and textures that will maximize the small area you are working with.

Here are a few things to consider when decorating your entryway

Use colors that complement and coordinate with other rooms on the main floor

While your entry allows for the perfect opportunity to make a statement, that doesn’t mean it should stick out like a sore thumb in comparison to the rest of your house.  Ideally, it should flow seamlessly into the next room, so choosing colors that complement and coordinate with the rest of the main floor is a critical step to connecting the dots.

Mix and match with patterns and textures, but don’t overdo it

An unforgettable first impression can be achieved by incorporating patterns and textures into a space that could be otherwise dull and boring. Placing a fun, vibrant rug in a hi-low pile in front of the door not only provides a way to catch undesirable elements from the outside, but it can provide texture and provide the “Wow” factor that captures the color scheme and personality of the rest of your home.

Provide a place to sit down

If space allows, be sure to include a bench or lounge chair in the entry.  Not only does it say “Come in and make yourself comfortable”, but it also provides a place to sit while putting your shoes on as you head out the door.   Don’t forget to accessorize the seating with fun throw pillows and possibly a small accent table off to the side.

Have fun with a statement piece

The easiest way to make a statement is with a piece of vibrant artwork, interesting furniture, or a fun area rug.  Or, how about taking a risk with a gorgeous chandelier, an attractive centerpiece table, a console table or a stunning chest. Of course, finding the best statement piece for your entryways will depend on the amount of space you have to work with.  If you are working with a smaller entryway, consider an exquisite lamp or set of sconces, gorgeous wallpaper, or a large decorative mirror.  It is possible to make a bold statement with just a little effort.
