Give Your Sunroom a New Look

Update Your Sunroom

Whether you have been lucky enough to have a sunroom for many years, or you have recently invested in an addition to your home, this all-weather “outdoor” living space is perfect for Minnesotans all year round.  Perhaps you are less inclined to get outside during these hot dog-days of summer and wish to relax in a space that brings the outdoors in.  Now is the perfect opportunity to give your sunroom a new and improved look.

Bright and Cheerful

Spending time in the sunroom is meant to be a happy and cheerful experience. While deep, rich hues may be used inside the home for a cozier atmosphere, they do not necessarily provide a sunny experience in an outdoor setting like this.  Beautiful, cheery sunrooms can be realized with a simple yet elegant color pallet of pale neutrals, or, if colorful and vibrant is more your style, shades like aqua and coral can make a major statement and bring that summer vibe to compliment all of our Minnesota seasons. If you like the idea of both color schemes, consider painting neutral walls, using a neutral carpet or area rug, and accessorizing with pops of vivid, fun colors.

Sunroom Outdoor Design

Patio furniture to provide comfort and style

The great thing about a sunroom is the option to use furniture that would be considered indoor/outdoor, such as metal and wicker framed pieces, or it is perfectly fine to use a casual style much as you would find in a family room.  Whatever your style, it can work! Opt for furniture that incorporates cozy cushions to maximize comfort and provide a relaxing area to spend time in.  Perhaps you already have patio furniture and just want a new look by changing out the cushion fabric?  Consider sofas, chairs, chaise lounges, side tables, and coffee tables in this space depending on the amount of room you have to work with.

Strategic accessorizing

Because the sunroom is meant to have that light and airy feel, the last thing you want to do is clutter it up with too much “stuff”.  Think along the lines of less is more, and keep accessories to an area rug, throw pillows a few houseplants, and perhaps some simple artwork if wall space allows.

Beautiful White Sunroom

Essential lighting additions

While you’ll likely get ample natural lighting through your sunroom windows, you need something extra to make up for the lost lighting when the sun goes down, especially as fall and winter approach. Both table and floor lamps can bring in an element of texture, color, and style, and they are certainly useful in illuminating the space to a greater extent without using too much artificial light.  You may want a large ceiling fan to move air throughout and finding a fixture that incorporates a light kit is a perfect option.  If you want to get a bit fancier, there are many, many gorgeous chandeliers in all sizes and finishes to choose from.
