2023 in Review: Color Palettes
Sherwin-Williams introduced four new color palettes for 2023, each using existing SW colors. The story behind each new palette emphasizes how interior decorating affects mental health and the important role that color plays in setting a mood and creating conversation.
Sherwin Williams Lore
The palette called Lore is inspired by “the call to create that is woven into the fiber of our being, present in the very air we breathe, binding us together in a community of makers that spans centuries and crosses cultures.” Lore’s colors are Wallflower, Studio Mauve, Carnelian, Toile Red, Serape, Dhurrie Beige, Pediment, Mineral Gray, Blue Peacock, and Nugget.
Sherwin Williams Origin
The Origin palette is about “mapping our inner world.” The SW color team suggests that “to chart a path through the wild and wonderful landscape of our lives, we begin within.” Origin’s colors are Fabulous Grape, Peppery, Goldfish, Chartreuse, Kale Green, Pure White, Skyline Steel, Homestead Brown, Black Magic, and Indigo.

Use of the color black
Speaking of color, do not forget about using black for sophistication and elegance. Black can make for a dramatic accent in a room as it provides depth and mood.
Fixer Upper: Mike Herrera home
HGTV’s Chip and Joanna Gaines love to incorporate black into their projects. One of the best examples out there for inspiration is the Punk Rock star Mike Herrera’s home. The kitchen in their home remodels offered expansive ceilings in the kitchen which allowed the Magnolia team to use ‘black’ as a way to bring a beautiful contrast and design element into the room.
Inspired by ancient Greece
Twenty-twenty-three brought two up-and-coming styles called: Hellenistic and Hygge. If you are looking for a bold and classic look for a room (without it being dated), drawing from the Hellenistic period might be the answer. It incorporates ancient Greek aesthetic elements into current décor to create a design that pays respect to this period of history while giving it a current time’s refresh. It bodes going back in time while combining modern components that make the design seem warm and strange. Statues and patterns create a bridge with heritage and give us an imaginative space that feels relaxing. This trend truly combines the best of nostalgic design with Greek opulence.
Think classical antiquity…
Hellenistic is about the visual, but the Hygge design style is about the soul, the inner you. “Hygge” (pronounced hyoo-guh), is a Danish term that encapsulates a design philosophy rooted in fostering contentment and overall well-being through thoughtful space planning and decoration. Foundational elements are furnishings that make you feel at ease. The mood is set by the right kind of illumination such as candles, and scents. Greenery, plants, and other elements of nature add to a sense of tranquility and connection to the outdoors.
