A Guide To Accessorizing Your Home

Accessorizing Your Home Tips

The rooms in your home have staple pieces that define the space and provide the function that you need.  However, it is the accessories that really pull the room together and make it look amazing!

If you need some inspiration for accessorizing your home successfully, use the great tips below.  Follow these guidelines and you will be amazed at the result!

Choose pieces that complement other furnishings

When beginning to formulate the look of your room, you may have a clear idea of color scheme and style. While this can be a good starting point, it is not necessary that every accessory is the same color or style. Rather, you should focus on collecting cohesive elements that complement each other.  For example, if blue is your color – mix it up and use many shades of blue to add interest.  Incorporate different colors, contrast, and patterns into the space that tell your own unique story.

Mirrors

Adding mirrors is an easy and affordable way to trick the eye into thinking a room is larger than it really is.  However, there’s more to know about hanging mirrors in the right spot. Mirrors should be accompanied by good light, and they should reflect something interesting. The last thing you want is for your beautiful mirror to capture the reflection of your track-lighting or another less-than-beautiful element.  Don’t be afraid to experiment with mirrors of different shapes, sizes and with various frames to bring some more personality to the room. A statement mirror or mirrors can be a powerful element of design.

Group accessories together

When it comes to accessorizing your home, you want to have interesting decor items that complement the room without cluttering up your space. It has been said that décor items should be arranged in odd numbers (like 3 or 5), but if the size and display are appropriate, groupings of one or two pieces can work just as well.

As you add more decor, keep in mind their size, shape, and scale for how you are going to arrange them. Having your accessories all the same height and lined up straight can be boring, so give your space some life by layering objects and varying their height.

Be sure that accessories are size appropriate

A big accessory faux pas is using decor that is too big or small for the space. For instance, a statement piece of artwork above the mantel that is too small can look awkward and distract from the fireplace as a focal point.    A good rule of thumb is to fill the space (wall area, built-in shelf, etc.) with about 2/3 of décor.  If artwork is to be hung above a 90” sofa, be sure that it is roughly 60” wide.  This proportion works every time!

Greenery – live or not

The green of a live plant (or artificial plant) can breathe life into your space and add to the pleasing aesthetic of the area.  Whether it’s an arrangement of succulents on your windowsill or spider plant on top of your bookshelf, they add dimension and natural color to your decor.
