Accessorizing Your Home

Accessorizing Your Home is Key

Accessorizing your home is by far the best way to make your rooms come alive and showcase your personality.  Even if you have nailed the look with furniture, wall color, and flooring, rooms will never feel complete without the use of accessories.  It’s like preparing a gourmet meal and not using any seasonings!  Here are a few tips that even a novice decorator can have success with.

Repeat the colors in the scheme

The rule of thumb is to repeat colors in a scheme at least three times within the room.  Place the color in different areas rather than clustering in one place.  Our eyes crave repetition and ideally, we want our visual movement to bounce around the entire space.  Even small accessories can pop in places you never expected when spaced correctly and surrounded by contrasting elements.

Artwork

The subject is just one thing to consider when choosing the perfect artwork.  Not only should your pieces complement the room’s style, but they should contain complimenting colors found in the overall color scheme.  The color and style of the frame is also an important consideration – a great piece of art can get lost in the wall behind it if the frame does not allow for it to stand out.  As far as where to hang artwork, the general rule of thumb is “eye-level”, which of course is subjective to the person doing the installation!  Be careful not to choose artwork that is too small for your space, which is a common mistake people make.  Another good rule of thumb is to fill up about 2/3 of the wall that the artwork will be placed on.  The same proportion is true when mounting pieces above console tables, sofas, etc.

Lamps

Lamps are more than a means to produce some additional light in the room – they can be a show-stopping accessory at the same time!  The design of today’s lamps couldn’t be more versatile – from glitz and glam to elements that came straight out of the forest.   A simple and dramatic lamp on top of a small end table or on a dining room buffet speaks volumes!

Accessories to tell your story

Whatever your interests and hobbies are, do not be afraid to use them in your design.  If you enjoy boating, then add a few nautical elements in your accessories.  If antiques are your thing, a few well-placed vintage pieces can really add some interest.  If the great outdoors is what you enjoy most, do not hesitate to bring the outdoors in by adding some rustic pieces to the room.  And of course, your favorite family photos in beautiful frames are a perfect addition to any almost room.

Accessorizing your home to tell your story

Acquiring accessories and changing them out seasonally or for no reason at all can really spice up your space.  Most importantly – have fun with it!!
