Creating a Functional & Stylish Office To Work From Home

Do you work from home?

Consider a virtual consultation with an interior designer to create a stylish and functional home office space to channel your productivity. With social distancing becoming the new (temporary) normal, work-from-home has become more of a widespread trend. For those who aren’t used to working remotely, it can be quite an adjustment. Productivity rates can go down, bad habits might be formed, and don’t forget about the unlimited snack breaks.

Thankfully, there’s another side of working from home – the energetic and creative one. Remote work can often yield better work than in the office, if it’s done right. But how do you nail down that flawless process? The most important step is to curate a home office space that works for you. Regardless of whether or not you have the time to consider the tips below when creating your new office space.

Choose the spot

Whether it is a grown child’s bedroom, the home office that was never used as one, or a secluded corner of your dining room, choose a space that you can set up just for work.  The area should be free from distractions, and ideally, it should have at least one window to let in some sunshine and perhaps a soft breeze.

Functional furniture

Many people who have had to make a quick transition to work-from-home are finding that their furniture does not allow for them to be organized and productive.  It can be difficult to pull together an entire fully-furnished home office overnight – even more so when furniture shopping possibilities are limited.  Using a desk, table, or other hard-surface workspaces will keep you on task and allow for a space to spread out your work.

If your work includes shuffling paper, think outside of the box to allow for surfaces to organize them on.  Perhaps you could repurpose a short bookcase, a large ottoman, or an occasional table from another part of your home to give you an additional work surface.  You may also want to consider using a card-table – if you don’t like the look, cover it up with a festive piece of fabric to bring in some color and style.

Personalize your home office

If you are like me, working (and living) in a space that is aesthetically appealing can inspire you to be more productive.  Avoid working in a bland office – it will certainly not encourage you to “get to work on time”!  Perhaps you need a new coat of paint in a cheery color, a new rug under your desk, or maybe you just need to repurpose some colorful artwork from another part of your home.

Try to make your surroundings something that you like to look at. Go purchase a new plant for your desktop or bookshelf, or maybe even a jumbo plant to fill the empty corner.  And, it doesn’t have to be real!!  Artificial plants are so much nicer than the plastic versions of yesteryear. Pick up a few nice frames and add some family photos to your home office.  Do not forget about candles.  They require little space and they can bring in color and style all while giving your office a wonderful aroma.

Your desk chair should be comfortable, but not too comfortable.  You want to stay focused and not become too relaxed.  If you are the type of person who needs a little variety, consider bringing in an upholstered chair that allows you to sit comfortably and also work on your laptop.  Don’t forget to add a throw pillow and blanket to make the chair more stylish and cozy.
