Upcoming Design Trends For 2022

2022 Design Trends

Already being a few months into 2022, there are some definite trends emerging. In the design world, it is more of a circle than a straight line – almost a spiral because of the way trends come back.

It can be hard for some, and more pleasant for others to accept an “old” trend that is reemerging. The difference when it comes back around though is that it has been refined. A little bit more modern here, more natural there, and the same idea of fun, bold, geometric patterns but without the same decade. It gives the same feeling of the era but still has the same standards of our current, modern lives.

In 2021, calming, muted colors hit a high because people were having to spend a lot of time in their homes. They needed soothing colors to help their home feel like a sanctuary. Another trend that caught on was multifunctional furniture and spaces. This trend will continue to carry over from 2021 to 2022 as we continue to modify our homes to best fit our needs.

Incorporating nature

If you haven’t already incorporated natural pieces into your home within this past year of health and wellness, it’s time to start. This trend has stuck around because of the health benefits of biophilic design.

Think of it as bringing the outside in. Think of wood, stone, plants, or pictures of the outdoors. Rattan rugs, wooden benches, wicker baskets, wool throw blankets, leaf-inspired wallpaper, you name it. This not only is healthier for us (less BPA’s and off-gassing – the release of chemicals in vapor form), but it is also wonderful for our mental health. Our bodies are connected to nature, we need them to survive, and these past couple of years have really highlighted that fact.

Design Trends 2022 - bring nature inside

Bringing nature inside will help bring peace and tranquility to your home.

70’s refresh…

Yes, you read that right, the 1970’s burnt orange, mustard yellow, and sage green are making their comeback. As mentioned in the intro though, it has come back refined to meet our modern style.

These beautiful, rich colors are making their comeback as beautiful accents to our previous calm and muted colors. We aren’t upholstering every piece of furniture with these colors though…

Another fun piece of the ’70s that has made its way back is mid-century modern furniture – peg legs, rounded edges, textured fabric, and teakwood.

Intricate patterns and bold colors

The 70’s retro patterns, positioned in fun, alluring color palettes are also becoming more popular. Whether it is just for a fun pop on your armchairs, or a continuous color replicated throughout the room in many patterns – it works.

Neutrals are still an important part of our foundation, using bold colors, patterns, or textures as accents. This way you won’t have to make major renovations and changes if you feel like changing your design style again. Incorporating yourself into your space will always be a wise investment.

Multi-purpose areas

As we learned last year, our homes don’t always function to the best of their abilities based on our current demands and needs. About half of the population, if not more, had to start working from home. Some people don’t have an office in their home so they had to figure out how to make it work.

How to work from home, how to possibly take care of kids at the same time and teach them school, how to keep your areas from overflowing with mess & how to keep it presentable can be a real challenge to figure out.

Multifunctional furniture is the solution to our modern-day problem. Whether it is purchasing a murphy bed for your spare room that doubles as a desk for your office, or finding an amazing closet organizer that helps you keep the clutter away and is easily accessible for future use. Storing blankets and extra throw pillows into a trunk or anything that serves more than one use is ideal.

Circular furniture

For the most part as a designer, curved or circular furniture go hand in hand with contemporary and Feng Shui. Both have been on the rise within the past few years as well. The lack of straight lines and harsh edges helps your mind unconsciously be more at ease and feel more welcomed into a space.

This armchair makes a bold statement but welcomes you to sit as well.

What’s the difference?

A lot of people question the difference between “fads” and design trends. The simple answer is that fads come as quickly as they go, and trends are specific things that are watched, predicted and followed while the people as a whole like the idea. That means that trends can last a few years but slowly change as they grow to continue incorporating what the people are looking for.
